That time of year is now upon us--the time of resolutions, goals, and promises. I'm terrible about keeping my resolutions (which are often related to health and fitness, and how many people actually keep those?). But, I still hold out hope that THIS year will be different. So, I'm hoping that by putting some of my writing goals out there, I'll be a little better about keeping them. Some may be out of reach, but, you've got to have a few big goals and resolutions, right?
1. Post 10 blogs per month. No set schedule, no limitations--just ten pieces of writing (good or bad).
2. Finish the Great American Novel.
2a. Finish the novel.
2b. Finish a draft of the mess of a novel.
This is a difficult one for me. I'm stumbling over bits and pieces of it and having a hard time finding my way to the end. But, I'm going to try to finish it in some way or another (so I can spend another 15+ years revising). I'm well aware that I may not keep this goal, but I do want to make every effort to do so.
3. Read as much as possible. I have stacks of books waiting for me, and I need to get through them! To paraphrase Stephen King, "If you don't have time to read, you don't have time to write."
4. Listen to as much music as possible. Music helps me write, helps me think, and just brings me so much joy. I live in a city with three music venues--so I'd like to take in as many live shows as I can.
5. Polish and submit poems to publications. I used to spend entire summers writing and sending out poems, and I've neglected that over the last few years. Hard to be a working writer if you aren't publishing.
So, here's hoping that by putting these resolutions and goals out there, I'll keep them! And to everyone else making resolutions on this day--best of luck to you!
